What is the community action program?
Federal and Connecticut state election laws prohibit unions from contributing members' dues to political candidates. The Voluntary Community Action Program (V-CAP) in the UAW's political action fund made up of voluntary contributions from its members, retirees, and their families. the money is used to support pro higher-education and pro-worker political candidates who have earned the endorsement of the UAW Community Action Program (CAP). Political action played a key role in establishing our Union and securing our first two contracts at UConn. Our political voice will continue to have a critical effect on state and federal decisions regarding UConn's teaching and research budgets, which impact our daily lives as graduate assistants and postdoctoral employees. From taxes; education, healthcare, and infrastructure policies; to support for government funding for scientific research, including climate change, politics affects our daily lives. It is essential for students and working families to make our voices heard in local, state, and national politics by supporting candidates and platforms who support us. Most of us are not in the financial position to donate large amounts and write big checks. By participating in the V-CAP program, we pool our small monthly contributions and together we can make a big difference in elections and policy. How can I join?
The V-CAP program is only available to US citizens. To start your V-CAP contribution or to change the amount you are currently contributing, simply download the membership PDF form. Write your name and email address at the top and then at the BOTTOM of the form select your V-CAP contribution amount. Please do not forget to sign and date the BOTTOM of the form, if you decide to participate in V-CAP. You can then directly submit the form to us by clicking the "Submit" button in the upper right hand corner.
